New feature aims to improve long-distance travel comfort
Chinese carmaker Seres has patented a unique in-car toilet system designed for use during long journeys, camping trips, or extended stays inside a vehicle. The concept focuses on convenience, allowing passengers to meet basic needs without stopping the car.
How the in-vehicle toilet works
According to the patent filed on April 10 in China, the toilet is hidden beneath a passenger seat. It slides out when needed, either with a button or through voice commands. This design keeps the cabin space clean and uncluttered when the feature is not in use.
The system includes a ventilation setup with a fan and exhaust pipe. This helps remove odors from the vehicle quickly. Waste is stored in a tank, which users must empty manually. A heating element inside the unit dries waste and evaporates liquid, reducing smell and improving hygiene.
Not the first, but still rare
In-car toilets are uncommon in passenger vehicles. They are mostly seen in long-distance buses. However, the idea is not entirely new. A customized version of the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith in the 1950s included a hidden toilet along with other luxury features.
Rising competition in China’s EV market
Seres and its sub-brand Aito mainly produce electric SUVs. These vehicles often include extra features like massage seats, entertainment systems, and built-in fridges. Automakers in China are adding such features to stand out in a crowded electric vehicle market.
The competition has led to aggressive pricing strategies, which have reduced profit margins for many companies. Despite this, Seres remains one of the few EV makers in China that continues to make a profit, alongside major players like BYD.
Will this feature reach production?
Seres has not confirmed whether it will include this toilet system in future models. For now, it remains a concept protected by a patent. Still, it highlights how far automakers are willing to go to improve comfort and attract buyers.
