Despite training on Thursday, the 22-year-old was deemed not entirely fit due to an injury that he brought into camp.
Jessica Naz of Tottenham was called up from the standby list to the starting lineup.
Sarina Wiegman, head coach of England, stated, “[James] already had some foot problems at club and we hoped she could build up but it’s just too early so unfortunately she can’t stay with us.”
Naturally, I’m disappointed. Although we and her both done everything, it’s simply too early and not good enough. To be ready, you have to be absolutely fit.
Regretfully, Jess [Naz] is prepared. We must move on because she showed improvement this week in both her club and during training.
This Friday’s match at St. James’ Park (20:00 BST kickoff) is the first of two straight matches against the world-ranked third-place France, who lead their qualification group.
James will also be absent from the second match, which is scheduled for next Tuesday in Saint-Etienne.
This week, Wiegman also lost defenders Niamh Charles and Lotte Wubben-Moy due to injury, but for the first time since February 2023, he can choose center backs Leah Williamson and Millie Bright together.
