In the most recent decision against President Donald Trump in the press freedom battle, a federal court granted CNN, MS NOW, and Politico journalists access to the White House, saying on Tuesday that he probably violated the law when he attempted to prohibit them.
In a written ruling, US District Judge Timothy Kelly clarified his emergency order on September 24 that restored the journalists’ access. Press freedom organizations and news organizations have accused Trump of retaliating against journalists in an unlawful manner for coverage he disapproves of.

Judge Rules Against Trump’s Media Ban
Kelly’s order from last month allowed journalists from Politico, MS NOW, and CNN temporary access to the White House grounds.
On Tuesday, the judge issued an order known as a preliminary injunction, which, unless an appeals court lifts it, will be in force until he renders a final decision in the complaint filed by the news organizations.
Kelly stated that, contrary to what government attorneys later claimed in court, Trump’s public statements made it apparent that he banned the news organizations because he thought their reporting was biased and false.
Although there have been conflicts between presidents and the media in the past, Trump’s campaign against the media is unique.
By restricting basic access to several major news organizations, attacking journalists personally for their work, and promoting media outlets perceived as more supportive of the government, he has upended decades of convention. In addition, he has sued many journalistic organizations.
In September, Trump said on his social media platform that CNN, Politico, and MS NOW “shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States.”
Court Restores Journalists’ White House Access
The media outlets have accused the Trump administration of fabricating false national security concerns to support the ban and said that the cancelation of their White House permits was illegal punishment for their journalistic coverage.
In a complaint, the outlets claimed that the restriction infringed upon their rights to due process, or equitable treatment by the government, and the First Amendment’s guaranties of freedom of expression and the press.
After Kelly determined that the suspension “likely violated their constitutional due process rights,” the White House authorized the reinstatement of the CNN, MS NOW, and Politico journalists’ access right away.
Legal Battle Over White House Press Access
“The president himself has stated that he intends to suppress speech, which is an exceptional circumstance. During the hearing, Theodore Boutrous, an attorney for the outlets, said Kelly, “He wants to force better coverage.”
Just a few weeks before the US midterm elections on November 3, when Trump’s fellow Republicans are vying for control of Congress, the court struggle is taking place. Opinion surveys show that Trump’s job approval ratings are at all-time lows due to worries about things like inflation and the Iran War.
