French football star Kylian Mbappé has strongly criticised Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla after she made racist comments targeting his background and education following Paraguay’s World Cup defeat against France.
Mbappe described Amarilla’s remarks as “despicable” and said she was not worthy of representing her position. He also defended Paraguay’s players, saying their hard work and passion during the tournament had been overshadowed by comments based on racism.
Mbappe Rejects Racism and Defends Respect in Football
The French forward responded to the senator’s comments on social media, saying that people should not be allowed to spread hatred and racism around the world.
Mbappe said Paraguay’s national team represented passion and honour throughout the competition. He added that one person’s offensive remarks should not erase the efforts and achievements of the players.
His response received support from many football fans and public figures who spoke against racism in sports.
French Football Federation Takes Legal Action
The French Football Federation announced plans to report the matter to prosecutors and seek legal action.
The federation called Amarilla’s statements unacceptable and said racist comments damage the values of respect, equality, and diversity that football promotes.
The FFF stated that attacks against French national team players also affect the image of France and must be addressed through legal channels.
Paraguay Government Rejects Senator’s Comments
The Paraguayan government also criticised Amarilla’s statements. Officials said the comments went against the country’s values of respect, peaceful cooperation, and human dignity.
The government made it clear that the senator’s views did not represent Paraguay as a nation.
Previous Racism Controversy Before France Match
The controversy followed earlier comments from former Paraguay goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert, who described France as a team made up of African players before the match.
His statement also faced criticism from French football officials. FFF president Philippe Diallo condemned the remarks and said they went against football’s principles of respect and diversity.
Mbappe’s Strong World Cup Performance
Despite the controversy, Mbappe continued to shine on the pitch. He scored the winning penalty during France’s victory over Paraguay and helped his team reach the quarter finals.
With seven goals in the tournament, Mbappe remained among the leading scorers alongside Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland.
French President Emmanuel Macron also supported Mbappe’s stance against racism, praising him for standing up for dignity, respect, and equality.
