After Peter Bone was removed from office as the constituency’s MP, the Labour Party defeated the Conservatives by a margin of more than 18,000 votes.
With 13,844 votes for Labour’s Gen Kitchen and 7,408 for the Tory Helen Harrison, the latter garnered a majority of 6,436.
According to Ms. Kitchen, who told Sky News that she answered the call to apply for selection while enjoying fish and chips on a Suffolk beach with her spouse and dogs, she had to shorten her honeymoon in order to support the campaign.
“After loading the car, we left for home. And we prepared to begin our selection campaign,” she remarked.
With a swing of 28.5%, Labour achieved the biggest swing of this parliament. The Dudley by-election in 1994 set an all-time record with a change of 29.2%.
Ms. Harrison is the spouse of former Member of Parliament Peter Bone, who served the Northamptonshire district from 2005 until his reelection in 2019 with a majority of 18,540.
