Concerns are increasing about the health of US Senator Mitch McConnell after he spent more than three weeks in the hospital. The 84 year old Kentucky Republican was admitted on 14 June, but his office has not shared specific details about his condition or treatment.
His team said on 2 July that McConnell was receiving “excellent care” and that his health was continuing to improve. However, the lack of detailed information has led to growing public questions about his ability to continue serving in office.
Kentucky Governor Requests More Transparency
Andy Beshear, the Democratic governor of Kentucky, sent a letter to McConnell’s office on Wednesday asking for more openness about the senator’s health.
Beshear said people deserve a clear update because concerns have increased about whether McConnell can continue carrying out his responsibilities as a senator.
Reports have also mentioned emergency calls from McConnell’s home. The recordings described an unconscious person experiencing cardiac arrest, with CPR being performed. However, McConnell was not directly identified in the calls.
Rumors Spread Online About McConnell’s Condition
Speculation about McConnell’s health increased after limited updates from his office and family. Some Republican lawmakers later said they had spoken with him by phone.
The rumors became stronger after Laura Loomer, a supporter of Donald Trump, made claims on social media about McConnell’s condition. She alleged that the senator was in a serious state and accused officials of hiding information.
McConnell’s colleagues pushed back against these claims by sharing their own updates. They said they had conversations with him and that he remained involved in discussions.
Republican Leaders Defend McConnell’s Condition
A spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Thune had a long conversation with McConnell. The discussion reportedly covered several issues, including national security matters.
Other Republican senators also said they had spoken with McConnell, attempting to reduce concerns surrounding his health.
Elaine Chao’s China Visit During Hospital Stay Draws Attention
McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, also faced questions after visiting China during his hospital stay.
Chinese officials confirmed that Chao met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing on 17 June, three days after McConnell entered the hospital.
A spokesperson for Chao said the trip had been planned in advance for family charity work. The spokesperson added that McConnell’s condition did not require her immediate return at that time. Chao has since returned to the United States.
McConnell’s Political Future Remains a Topic of Discussion
McConnell has served in the US Senate for more than four decades and remains one of the most influential Republican figures in American politics.
While his office continues to say he is improving, questions remain about his recovery and future role in the Senate. More updates from his team are expected as public attention continues to focus on his health.
