Speaking to local station news on Tuesday, a representative from the Taliban’s sports authority claimed that mixed martial arts (MMA) was excessively violent and carried a risk of death.
The Taliban’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Afghanistan issued the directive.
It follows an examination of the sport’s adherence to Sharia, or Islamic law.
“The General Directorate on Physical Education and Sport of the Taliban said in a statement to the news agency that it was found that the sport is problematic with respect to Sharia and that it has many aspects which are contrary to the teachings of Islam.”
This choice has been made for that reason.”MMA is a well-liked sport in Afghanistan, especially among the youth, and it developed a fervent local following in the two decades preceding the Taliban’s 2021 comeback to power.
While the Afghanistan Fighting Championship (AFC) and Truly Grand Fighting Championship (TGFC) staged numerous bouts, the Mixed Martial Arts Federation was established in 2008.
