MLB Ends Grand Teton Evaluation
MLB has been conducting preliminary investigation on potential locales for a special regular-season game. Grand Teton National Park was one of the venues under consideration.
After reports about the initiative surfaced, it garnered immediate condemnation.
Jackson Mayor, Teton County Commissioner, and President of the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce wrote to Manfred and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. They were very opposed to having a baseball game within the national park.
Local Officials Raise Concerns
Local leaders argued that the park should remain focused on conservation and public use.
Their concerns came as MLB explored locations outside the usual major league ballpark network. The league has previously held special games at unusual venues across the United States.
Manfred responded in a letter on Thursday. He said MLB had no formal plan to stage a game at Grand Teton.
Conservation Group Welcomes Decision
The National Parks Conservation Association welcomed MLB’s decision.
Allison Michalski, a senior program manager with the organization, said there was no need to bring baseball into conflict with national parks.
The group also highlighted Grand Teton’s importance as a natural destination. The park attracts visitors because of its mountains, forests, wildlife and other natural features.
