In an effort to protect freedom of expression in India, social media platform X stated on Monday that it was “deeply concerned” by an Indian court’s decision to invalidate its challenge to New Delhi’s content removal procedures and that it will appeal the decision.
For months, Elon Musk’s company X has been at odds with Indian authorities over their new approach for removing information, which they have equated to censorship. The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has maintained that the new system guaranteed accountability online and addressed the spread of illegal information.
X claimed on Monday that the new system “has no basis in the law,” that it violated the country’s highest court’s decisions, and that it breached Indians’ fundamental rights to free speech and expression.
