President of the Punjab branch of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Rana Sanaullah, made a significant announcement on Friday: Nawaz Sharif will once again assume the leadership of the ruling party.
His comments coincided with the PML-N leader receiving a “clean chit” from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the courts regarding several accusations brought against him.
In a conversation with reporters in Lahore after the party’s leadership meeting, the former security chief declared: “Nawaz Sharif will lead the party again.” The PML-N will advance under his direction.”
Sanaullah said that the PML-N chief has received a “clean chit” from the courts.
In 2017, Nawaz resigned as prime leader of the nation when the Supreme Court permanently barred him from public office for failing to disclose a payable salary.
Nawaz was removed from office as PML-N president by the Supreme Court in February 2018 due to his involvement in the Panama Papers case.
The highest court ruled in its decision that an individual barred by Articles 62 and 63 is ineligible to hold the position of leader of a political party. But in October of last year, the seasoned politician returned home after living in self-imposed exile in London for four years.
