The agreement between two parties to form a coalition government will be contingent on conditional backing from one of them, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which will evaluate choices on a case-by-case basis, a senior PPP official said on Wednesday.
Such an agreement might make things difficult for the government, which must make tough decisions to navigate the country out of a financial crisis while facing a powerful opposition bloc led by supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
“It will be, of course, a roller coaster,” said political commentator and novelist Ayesha Siddiqa of the next government’s journey.
The agreement between Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of three-time Premier Nawaz Sharif on late Tuesday night ended days.
However, the PPP is not taking cabinet positions, according to its secretary of communications, Faisal Karim Kundi, and its parliamentary support would be determined by the party’s attitude.
“We will support policy decisions on an issue-by-issue basis,” Kundi stated, adding that the PPP would vote for the PML-N’s prime minister nominee, Shehbaz Sharif, the younger brother of party president Nawaz Sharif.
