On Wednesday, eight states filed complaints against OpenAI, claiming that the company’s ChatGPT chatbot is a dangerous product that has hurt kids and tricked parents.
According to a statement by Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird, separate lawsuits against OpenAI have been filed in the state courts of Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana. The goal of Iowa’s complaint, according to her, is to “vindicate the rights of Iowans affected by OpenAI’s willful, dangerous, reckless, and unlawful conduct.”

Iowa Lawsuit Challenges ChatGPT's Safety for Children
“OpenAI is deceiving Iowans and harming children,” Bird declared in a statement. “OpenAI says ChatGPT is safe even if it is teaching people to commit suicide, urging them to harm others, and providing risky medical advice while posing as their fictitious friend. Protecting our children and making OpenAI responsible under state law are the main goals of my case.
According to Drew Pusateri, a spokesman for OpenAI, the business has incorporated age-specific safeguards onto its software that “many other AI products lack.” He also mentioned that OpenAI is collaborating with states to develop industry-wide regulations.
OpenAI Faces Lawsuits Over Child Safety
OpenAI is facing rising scrutiny over its safety and security standards, notably around how the business is striving to protect minors. ChatGPT is accused in several wrongful death lawsuits of causing users to have dangerous illusions and, in certain situations, to take their own lives.
Over the past year, OpenAI has improved safety features for kids and parents. In August, it introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a special experience for minors. In order to lessen exposure to dangerous or developmentally inappropriate content, the product has a number of instructional features and age-appropriate safeguards.
OpenAI Introduces Teen Safety Protections
In a statement at the time, OpenAI stated that “teens should be able to use AI to learn, create, and explore.” “However, that access should be accompanied by safeguards that take into account their developmental stage, strengthen relationships in the real world, and encourage long-term, healthy use.”
