Amidst vocal protests from the opposition, the National Assembly passed both the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill 2024 and the Elections (Amendment) Bill 2024 by a majority vote.
Opposition members expressed their concerns throughout the session by refusing to leave their seats while the laws were being passed. Opposition PTI member Aamir Dogar berated the administration for passing the bills too quickly, citing the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill in particular as something that will severely utilized for political gain.
The government sought to punish them by passing the law, he said, adding that the bill was reminiscent of the British era and that the party was planning a rally tomorrow. Additionally, he compared the current state of affairs to prior repressive actions.
