Former Disney CEO Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared, are purchasing the majority stake in one of the most recognizable sports clubs in the world. LA Lakers Set for Record $12.5bn Sale to Kushner and Iger In a deal that was unanimously authorized by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025. Walter purchased his stake from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion (£7.45 billion), setting a previous record. Kushner and Iger said: “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. “We greatly admire the vision and leadership of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. How Mark Walter Became Lakers Owner “Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” In 1979, Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers for $67.5 million (£50 million), which also included the Los Angeles Kings hockey franchise and the Kia Forum, a Los Angeles arena. Before a contract was finalized with Walter, who also holds a part in the LA Dodgers alongside Todd Boehly, ownership was transferred to his six children in a trust upon his death in 2013. Lakers Have 17 NBA Championships “One of the greatest honors of my life has been owning the Los Angeles Lakers,” Walter remarked. The community, the supporters, and a city that views this team as family are what I will take with me, even if it has been an incredible investment. I appreciate being welcomed into this chapter by Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff. Los Angeles owns the Lakers, and I’m confident that the greatest is still to come.” The LA Lakers have won 17 NBA titles, one fewer than the Boston Celtics’ record of 18. Kushner’s involvement in the recent scandal regarding Fifa head Gianni Infantino and an abandoned plan before the sale. US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Russia Accuses Ukraine of Deadly Attack in Starobilsk Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to respond after accusing Ukraine of carrying out a deadly drone strike in the occupied town of Starobilsk in the Luhansk region. According to Russian officials, the overnight attack killed six people and injured 39 others. Authorities also said 15 people were still missing after the strike damaged a student dormitory building. Putin claimed the attack happened in three waves and involved 16 drones. Speaking at a reception in Moscow, he rejected suggestions that Russian air defence systems caused the destruction. He stated that no military or intelligence facilities were located near the building. Putin also instructed the Russian military to prepare plans for retaliation. Ukraine Says Russian Drone Unit Was Targeted Ukraine’s military later confirmed that its forces carried out a strike in Starobilsk. However, Ukrainian officials said the operation targeted the headquarters of Russia’s elite Rubicon drone military unit. Kyiv accused the Rubicon unit of launching repeated drone attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine. Ukraine did not confirm whether the targeted building was the same dormitory mentioned by Russian authorities. The Ukrainian military stressed that its forces continue to follow international humanitarian law during military operations. Officials also said Ukrainian attacks focus only on military infrastructure and facilities connected to combat activities. Injured Student Shown on Russian Television Russian state television aired footage of an injured student identified as 19 year old Diana Shovkun. Reports said she suffered head injuries after a concrete slab collapsed during the strike. Russian media did not release images or videos of the people reportedly killed in the incident. Zelensky Claims Strike on Russian Security Headquarters Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed Ukrainian forces also struck the headquarters of Russia’s Federal Security Service in the occupied Kherson region. Zelensky said around 100 Russian personnel were either killed or injured during that operation. Russia’s defence ministry has not officially commented on the claim. However, a pro Kremlin Telegram channel acknowledged casualties following what it described as a massive drone attack. Previous Article AI Fake Evidence Scandal Damages South Korean Actor Kim Soo-hyun’s Career Police Seek Arrest Warrant Against YouTuber South Korean police are pursuing an arrest warrant for YouTuber and media personality Kim Se-ui over allegations that he created fake evidence using artificial intelligence to defame actor Kim Soo-hyun. Investigators claim the YouTuber manipulated screenshots of text messages and used AI-generated audio to falsely suggest that Kim Soo-hyun had dated late actress Kim Sae-ron when she was underage. The controversy reportedly began shortly after Kim Sae-ron’s death last year. She died at the age of 24, and the incident sparked widespread public discussion across South Korea’s entertainment industry. Alleged AI Audio and Edited Messages According to authorities, Kim Se-ui uploaded a voice recording online that appeared to feature Kim Sae-ron claiming she had been in a relationship with Kim Soo-hyun since middle school. Police now believe the recording was created using AI technology. They also allege that screenshots of private messages were altered to make it appear as though the actress had exchanged texts with the actor. Investigators say the false claims were intentionally spread online to attract attention and generate financial profit through views and engagement. Kim Se-ui has denied wrongdoing. In a recent video, he claimed the investigation against him was an attempt to interfere with his own reporting activities. Career and Mental Health Impact on Kim Soo-hyun The allegations severely affected Kim Soo-hyun’s public image and professional career. Police documents reportedly state that the scandal damaged his reputation, disrupted his business activities, and harmed his ability to continue working in the entertainment industry. Authorities also revealed that the actor is currently receiving psychiatric treatment due to the emotional stress linked to the controversy. Kim Soo-hyun has repeatedly denied all accusations connected to the case. South Korea’s Celebrity Culture Under Pressure Celebrities in South Korea often face intense public scrutiny. Even minor controversies can lead to major backlash, damaged careers, and loss of public support. Before her death, Kim Sae-ron had already faced criticism online following a 2022 drink-driving incident. Despite being considered one of the country’s most talented young actresses, she struggled with public criticism after the case. Following her death, rumors about her alleged relationship with Kim Soo-hyun quickly spread across social media platforms. The controversy gained momentum after the release of the alleged audio recording and edited messages. Kim Soo-hyun’s agency initially denied that the two stars had ever been romantically involved. Next Article Italian Divers Die in Maldives Cave Diving Accident Incident Overview A tragic diving accident in the Maldives has claimed the lives of four Italian scuba divers. The group went missing during a deep cave dive in Vaavu Atoll. The cave reached around 60 metre depth and conditions inside were very difficult. Rescue teams later recovered the bodies from one section of the cave. Recovery Operation Specialist divers from Finland and the Maldives led the search operation. Finnish diver Sami Paakkarinen took part in the recovery mission and described the location as extremely challenging. He said all four bodies were found close together inside the cave. He also confirmed that the first diver was located shortly after the group went missing. A Maldivian rescue diver also died during the search effort. This has added further tragedy to an already difficult operation. Concerns About Diving Equipment Sami Paakkarinen raised concerns about the equipment used by the divers. He said the setup was not suitable for such a dangerous cave environment. He explained that experienced divers normally use a guide rope or diving reel to stay oriented in complex underwater spaces. He said his team would never enter similar conditions without this safety system. He suggested the lack of proper tools may have contributed to the accident. However, he stressed that investigators will decide the final cause. Investigation Outlook Officials believe human error could have played a role, but the exact cause is still under review. The bodies will be returned to Italy, and post mortem examinations will follow in the coming days. Authorities are continuing to examine how the dive was planned and why safety measures may have been insufficient for the conditions. Italian Divers Die in Maldives Cave Diving Accident
