The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has nominated returning officers (ROs) in Islamabad and all four provinces to oversee the Senate election, which is expected to take place in the first week of April.
According to a notification issued by the election watchdog on Sunday, ECP Director General Training Saeed Gul will be the Returning Officer (RO) in the federal capital, while provincial election commissioners Aijaz Anwar Chohan, Sharifullah, Shamshad Khan, and Muhammad Farid Afridi will be returning officers in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.
According to Radio Pakistan, members of the National Assembly will vote for one general seat and one for technocrats, including Ulema from the federal capital.
The ECP also urged members of the provincial assemblies of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan to elect candidates for seven general seats, two women seats, and two technocrat seats, including Ulema from each province, as well as one non-Muslim seat each from Punjab and Sindh, which will become vacant after the terms of incumbent senators expire tomorrow (Monday).
By-elections on six empty seats on Thursday
In addition, a by-election for six vacant Senate seats will be held on Thursday (March 14).
According to the electoral commission, voting will take place in the upper chamber of parliament, as well as the Sindh and Balochistan assemblies in Karachi and Quetta.These seats in the general category became vacant in the federal capital, two in Sindh, and three in Balochistan, as senators resigned after being elected to the National Assembly and Sindh and Balochistan provincial parliament, respectively.
