Beloved Actor Passes Away at Sydney Hospital
Veteran actor Sam Neill has died at the age of 78 after developing pneumonia, his family and longtime agent have confirmed. He passed away on Monday at a hospital in Sydney, leaving behind a remarkable acting career that spanned more than five decades.
Earlier this week, Neill’s family described his death as sudden and unexpected. His agent later shared the official cause of death to correct inaccurate reports that had circulated online.
Family Confirms He Had Defeated Lymphoma
According to his longtime agent, Philip Grenz, Sam Neill died from pneumonia and not from cancer. Before becoming ill, the actor had successfully overcome non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after receiving CAR T cell therapy.
Neill revealed his cancer diagnosis in 2023 through his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This? In April this year, he announced that he was in remission. His family confirmed that he remained cancer free until his passing.
Grenz also said Neill worked tirelessly during the past year. Despite his health challenges, he completed four film and television projects that will be released in the coming months.
A Career That Inspired Millions
Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Sam Neill became one of the world’s most respected actors. He earned global recognition for playing Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park film series.
Throughout his career, he appeared in more than 150 film and television productions. Some of his most memorable roles include performances in The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Dead Calm, Event Horizon, and the popular television drama Peaky Blinders.
His final film appearance came in The Fox in 2025, while his last television role was in Netflix’s Untamed. Fans will also see him in the upcoming films Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and The Last Resort, both scheduled for release in 2027.
