LAHORE: The Punjabi administration introduced a bill in the province assembly to change the existing legislation, allowing Section 144 to be enforced for a minimum of three months, according to The News on Sunday.
The Code of Criminal Procedure (Punjab Amendment) Act 2024, which aims to change the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898, was introduced to the Punjab Assembly on September 5 by Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman, the minister for finance for Punjab.
Unless there is an immediate threat to public health, safety, or life, the law now permits the provincial government to impose Section 144 for a maximum of two days, with the possibility of a seven-day extension.
The proposed modification, however, would give the deputy commissioner (DC) the authority to impose a 30-day ban on public meetings, with the secretary of the Home Department keeping oversight.
