For the first time since earning his lone full cap as a 15-minute substitute in a goalless draw against Brazil at Wembley in November 2017, Solanke has been called into England’s squad thanks to his late development, which really got going at Bournemouth last season and resulted in a £65 million summer move to Spurs.
Additionally, it is a just reward for the unwavering perseverance of a guy who was picked for big things after playing for the England Under-17 squad that won the European Championship.
Only one game was played by Solanke for Chelsea, and his July 2017 move to Liverpool did not pan out as he scored just once in 27 appearances, with his opportunities being restricted by his position behind the elite trio of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane under then manager Jurgen Klopp.
Solanke finally began to reach his potential after moving to Bournemouth for £19 million in January 2019. In 216 outings, including 21 in 42 appearances last season, he scored 77 goals.
Even still, the former manager of Liverpool, Klopp, expressed his admiration for Dom before his team’s January trip to Bournemouth, saying, “I’m so happy for Dom because when we signed him we were all so excited about the talent he had.”
