India’s Private Space Industry Reaches a Major Milestone
India’s private space sector achieved a historic breakthrough after Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched its Vikram 1 rocket into Low Earth Orbit. The launch took place from the Indian Space Research Organisation’s launch facility in Sriharikota, marking the first time an Indian private company has placed a rocket into orbit.
The seven storey Vikram 1 rocket lifted off on schedule and completed its mission in about 16 minutes. During the flight, it traveled nearly 450 kilometers above Earth before successfully reaching its planned orbit. This achievement places India among a small group of nations where private companies have independently completed orbital rocket launches.
Skyroot Plans to Offer a Space Taxi Service
Skyroot Aerospace wants to make satellite launches faster, easier, and more flexible. Instead of waiting months or even years for space on large rockets, customers can book dedicated launches designed specifically for their satellites.
The company compares its service to booking a taxi instead of waiting for public transport. This approach allows satellite operators to select the orbit they need without depending on fixed launch schedules. The goal is to reduce delays while giving customers greater control over their missions.
Vikram 1 Named After India’s Space Pioneer
The rocket carries the name of Vikram Sarabhai, who is widely recognized as the father of India’s space program. Vikram 1 is a small launch vehicle that can carry payloads weighing up to 350 kilograms into Low Earth Orbit.
Its compact design makes it suitable for launching small satellites, scientific equipment, and technology demonstration missions. This growing market continues to attract commercial customers from around the world.
Mission Carried Six Payloads Into Orbit
The first orbital mission, named Aagman, successfully delivered six payloads into space. The mission included scientific instruments and satellites from different organizations.
Among the payloads were a robotic arm designed to help remove space debris, an Earth observation camera, and satellites from several customers, including one developed by a German company. The successful deployment demonstrates Skyroot’s ability to support both research and commercial space missions.
