She shared that he loved the ocean and spent much of his time fishing. She described him as generous, loyal, and kind, saying the family feels deep grief after the sudden loss. Tributes from community and sport club The Kingsley Amateur Football Club in Perth paid tribute to him, remembering him as a valued member and a friend to many. The club said he was known for his warm personality and positive presence. The Australian Underwater Federation also expressed sympathy. Its president noted that spearfishing carries risks, even though safety measures are used in organized settings such as boats and shark spotting systems. He added that recreational diving can leave people more exposed because conditions are less controlled. Official police details WA Police Sergeant Michael Wear said the attack happened while Mattaboni was close to his boat, about 20 meters away at the time.
