Late Twist Sends GB Into Last Four
Team GB’s men are now just two wins away from Winter Olympic gold after sealing a place in the semi finals in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
For a while, it did not look likely. Bruce Mouat’s world champions were in real danger of going out early after losing to Canada in their second last round robin match. That defeat left them needing both a strong performance and a bit of luck.
They delivered the performance. A convincing win over the United States on Wednesday kept their campaign alive. Then they waited.
Their fate was confirmed when Italy lost to Switzerland on Thursday morning. That result pushed Britain into the top four and into the semi finals.
Big Test Against Unbeaten Switzerland
It is also a familiar one. The match repeats last April’s world championship final. Mouat and his Scottish team know what is at stake.
Win, and they move into Saturday’s gold medal match at 18:05 GMT. At the very least, they would secure silver and match the medal they won in Beijing four years ago.
Bronze Still Possible If They Fall Short
They would face the loser of the other semi final between Canada and Norway. Norway finished above Britain in the standings after beating them on head to head record.
Women’s Team Still Fighting
The women’s rink also has work to do. They must beat Italy on Thursday at 13:35 GMT to stay in contention.
Even then, they need Switzerland to defeat the United States to reach the semi finals. Their qualification depends on both their own result and help from elsewhere.
