Troops Question Leadership Decision
Many Ukrainian soldiers and wounded veterans have expressed disappointment after President Volodymyr Zelensky decided not to reappoint Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov during the latest cabinet reshuffle. The decision has sparked criticism from military personnel who believe Fedorov played a key role in strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities.
Several service members said the move has damaged morale at a time when the country continues to face intense fighting. While some soldiers spoke publicly, many requested anonymity because of concerns about discussing political matters while serving in the military.
One injured soldier recovering in hospital shared an emotional message before undergoing surgery. He said he hoped Fedorov would return to the Defence Ministry because he believed the minister represented the values many soldiers had fought to protect.
Frontline Soldiers Share Mixed Reactions
Not every soldier viewed the controversy in the same way. Some troops stationed on the front line said daily combat remains their main concern.
One soldier explained that heavy attacks from Russian multiple launch rocket systems had struck their positions, leaving little time to focus on political developments in Kyiv. For many serving on the battlefield, survival and protecting fellow soldiers remain the highest priorities.
Despite these views, many military personnel continue to praise Fedorov’s work and say his leadership helped modernize Ukraine’s armed forces.
Fedorov’s Military Reforms Earned Strong Support
During his time in government, Mykhailo Fedorov led major technology initiatives that transformed Ukraine’s military operations. He promoted the wider use of drones, digital systems, and modern battlefield technology to improve efficiency and strengthen defence efforts.
Supporters credit him with helping Ukraine respond more effectively to Russian forces through faster innovation and improved coordination.
One of his best known projects introduced a performance based system that rewarded frontline drone units for successfully destroying enemy equipment and military targets. Many soldiers believe this approach encouraged rapid innovation and improved operational effectiveness.
Public Protests Continue in Kyiv
The leadership change also triggered demonstrations in Kyiv, where protesters gathered with handmade signs calling for Fedorov’s return.
Many participants argued that replacing the defence minister sends the wrong message to soldiers risking their lives on the battlefield. Others expressed concern that experienced officials should remain in key positions while the war continues.
Although the protests attracted attention, many soldiers believe the government is unlikely to reverse its decision.
Uncertainty Remains for Ukraine’s Military
The removal of Mykhailo Fedorov has created uncertainty among many members of Ukraine’s armed forces. Supporters argue that his technology driven reforms strengthened the military and improved battlefield performance.
As Ukraine continues its fight against Russia, many soldiers hope future defence policies will maintain the innovation and modernization that have become central to the country’s military strategy.
