Jonny Burnell, a veteran of the US Navy, served 111 days on board the USS Vinson during the US war in Afghanistan in 2001.

Unlike other sailors who are restricted to certain areas of the ship where they operate, he was able to visit crew members across the ship as a Navy photographer. Before the invention of digital photography, soldiers were frequently excited to have their photos taken whenever they met him.

He saw a shift in the crew during his more than three months on board the USS Carl Vinson, as their enthusiasm and vigor gave way to what he described as a “sadness.”

USS Abraham Lincoln sailors face deployment concerns

He remembers a moment when the shipmates’ eyes were clearly lifeless. “I still think the hardest part of my job was watching the sadness in people’s faces every frickin’ day.”

As worries about circumstances aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed as part of the US-Iran battle since December 11—more than twice as long as his mission aboard the Vinson—grow, Burnell told the BBC that he has been on the verge of tears.

The Military Times and Stars & Stripes, two US periodicals that cover the military, claim that soldiers aboard the Lincoln are dealing with food shortages, malfunctioning plumbing, and fatigue.

Concerns about their mental health declining as a result of conditions have been voiced by relatives of sailors on board.

Officials reject Lincoln reports

According to former Navy Lt Commander Steve Rogers, Director of the Association of the United States Navy (AUSN), media stories are mostly false and “99% hype.”

He has been interacting with the families of soldiers aboard the Lincoln as part of his work with the AUSN, a nonprofit organization that supports US Navy servicemembers.

He asserts that the troops are well equipped for the circumstances they find themselves in and that it is common for families to worry about their loved ones during a conflict.

A relative of a sailor on the Lincoln said in an interview that their family member had dropped 65 pounds (29 kg) and was experiencing fatigue because to the continuous tremors and noise.

Trump and Navy chief address Lincoln concerns

When questioned on Friday about the condition on board the Lincoln, Trump said the deployment is “not nearly long enough” and rejected the claims.

The commander of US Central Command, which is in charge of Middle East operations, said in a statement on Sunday that “the Lincoln currently has among the lowest number of cases related to mental health” among the 11 operational aircraft carriers in the US military.

Admiral Brad Cooper stated that “service at sea for long periods isn’t for everyone” and that “this doesn’t mean all is perfect.”

“Mental health is another aspect of individual health and requires our attention just like physical health and spiritual health,” he said, adding that it is particularly difficult and demanding.

Burnell recalls harsh life aboard USS Vinson

Burnell claims that a coworker aboard the Vinson, which he called a “floating prison,” tried all in his power to be expelled, including selling narcotics and establishing a “underground rave club”.

There was little space to roll over on Burnell’s small bed, which the troops called “coffin racks,” and the ropes that slow and capture planes as they land passed through a wall directly behind his head.It was simply constant cacophony. He remarks, “The ship is just always noisy.”

He continues, “Guns are constantly firing and planes are constantly landing or taking off.”

Lincoln conditions remain unclear

The current state of affairs aboard the Lincoln is still unknown. During their three days on board, a crew from last month did not find any major problems.

According to the publication, a number of soldiers reported dropping weight over “many months” and being forced to ration meals. Even though there were some indications of mold, the showers were hot.

In order to relieve the Lincoln, the US has sent another battleship, which is expected to reach the Middle East in a week.

The USS George Washington, the replacement ship, has experienced mental health issues in the past.

A military inspector’s probe was prompted by a string of suicides that occurred on board the ship in 2022 while it was still parked at a port in Virginia.

Mental health concerns linked to life at sea

A military inspector’s probe was prompted by a string of suicides that occurred on board the ship in 2022 while it was still parked at a port in Virginia. The investigation’s conclusion revealed that a number of issues pertaining to substandard living circumstances were the cause of the fatalities rather than a single problem.

According to the May 2023 report, the senior brass of the Navy had “let our standards slip – and in doing so we let our people down.”

The US government has been researching the problem for years, according to Dr. Harold Kudler, the former chief of mental health policy for the US Veterans Administration (VA).

The loneliness of being on a ship, according to Kudler, is interspersed with periods of “extreme alertness” and protracted boredom.

Isolation and Stress Affect Sailors at Sea

You’re alone. You have no idea exactly what will occur. You no longer even know what the mission is. Additionally, you have no idea when you will return home.

The military produced a training DVD to assist troops who could be experiencing “combat irritability” during World War 2.

In the movie, a sailor below deck was assigned to guard machinery in a solitary, confined compartment as the battle against the enemy raged outside. He is unable to perceive the adversary. What’s happening topside is unknown to him. He is responsible for keeping an eye on the two gages in the engine room, according to Kudler.

The movie’s goal was to show that soldiers are still “under tremendous stress, high alertness and subject” even when they are not firing guns.

VA study highlights suicide risk in troops

Kudler studied suicide throughout his tenure at the Veteran Administration. According to years of VA study, soldiers and veterans are 50% more likely to commit suicide than the average American.

According to him, the military’s difficulty is to acknowledge some of the monotony of being a cog in a bigger machine while also making every soldier and sailor feel like a vital part of the greater purpose. Troops occasionally engage in enjoyable activities on board, such as singing competitions and picnics on the upper deck, to counteract loneliness and boredom.

Kudler is in favor of Democrats in Congress calling for an inquiry into the circumstances on board the Lincoln and how it came to be.

Rogers warns of crew stress

According to him, the ship can only function as well as its crew. These 5,000 individuals make up a community, not simply stressed-out men and women. The community is under stress.”

As the crew departs, the ship’s capabilities diminish. Therefore, one should be quite concerned if the reports being circulated are accurate.”

According to Rogers, an AUSN member who has spent weeks at a time aboard tiny Navy ships, boredom and melancholy are common among military personnel. All of us are human. Everybody has challenging times.

He deems the dissemination of misleading information by the media “absolutely outrageous” and is furious about the damage he claims it is doing to the morale of soldiers and their families.

Rogers dismisses overboard reports

He claims that although soldiers may experience boredom or anxiety, they are well-prepared to handle the stress since the ships they are on have chaplains and mental health counselors.

He argues that reports of sailors discussing whether to leap off the ship are exaggerated, using jokes he heard when serving on an aircraft carrier. He laughs and brushes it off as “locker room talk,” saying, “I wish I could parachute outta here.”
