The relationship that people are making between their economic dissatisfaction and the policies that President Donald Trump and legislative Republicans have put in place may be the most dangerous of all the factors endangering the GOP this year.

When Americans are unhappy with the state of the economy, presidents always suffer from being close. However, Trump is more vulnerable this year. Polls constantly show that a sizable majority of voters think his actions, especially those related to tariffs and the Iran War, are making the issue that most worries them worse: the high cost of living.

Quick Fact

Detail Information
What Happened Senate Republicans supported key Trump policies.
Tariff Votes Eight votes supporting Trump's tariff agenda.
War Related Votes 14 votes supporting the administration's position.
Key Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky opposed the first six war related votes.
Legislation 2025 reconciliation bill.
Key Provisions Medicaid and food assistance cuts, tax cuts, and increased immigration funding.
Why It Matters The votes highlight Republican support for Trump's policy agenda.

Republicans Face Backlash Over Trump Policies

Former GOP Representative Tom Davis, who chaired the National Republican Congressional Committee while in office, said, “It’s not just the underlying economy and (being) in a bad cycle.” He claims that “you’ve got two specific presidential actions”—tariffs and the war’s effect on petrol prices—that the majority of Americans feel are making it harder for them to live comfortably.

For Republicans in Congress, it would be concerning enough. However, the fact that Republicans in the House and Senate have consistently, nearly unanimously, voted in favor of Trump’s policies regarding Iran and the war has increased their vulnerability.

Trump Policies Challenge Republican Incumbents

According to seasoned Democratic pollster Geoff Garin, linking Republicans to those programs has become “the heart and soul of Democratic campaigns against Republicans incumbents.”

“And it is more difficult for Republican incumbents to slip the punch because of the hard fact of the voting record.” Because so many of them “have expressed support for Trump policies even if they were not in office to actually vote for them,” Garin continues, even GOP rivals are having a hard time distancing themselves from these controversial decisions.

Because they thought he could ease the pressure on their living standards, Americans saw Trump’s fingerprint on their biggest.

Polls Show Voters Blame Trump for Rising Costs

A bipartisan team of pollsters conducted the most recent Wall Street Journal poll last month, and 60% of registered voters thought Trump’s policies had made the economy worse.

This is more than twice as many as the 25% who claimed his activities have improved conditions. When asked why costs are “higher than usual,” 67% of respondents to the most recent AP/NORC survey blamed “Trump’s policies,” a far greater percentage than the 32% who cited “factors outside Trump’s control.”

Republicans’ Voting Records Tie Them to Trump’s Policies

In any case, congressional Republicans would be at risk given the clear connection that the majority of people are making between Trump’s policies and rising expenses. The results of midterm elections are now heavily influenced by opinions about the current president.

However, Republicans in Congress may be particularly vulnerable because nearly all of them have consistently supported the particular policies that the public now holds responsible for increased expenses.

At least five votes in favor of Trump’s tariff agenda have been cast by House Republicans. The Democratic efforts to revoke Trump’s tariff authority have never received the support of more than six Republicans.

Republicans’ Votes Become Democrats’ Campaign Focus

Republicans in the Senate tell a similar tale. They have supported Trump’s tariffs eight times, with only a few Republicans ever opposing him, and they have supported the war fourteen times; on the first six votes, all Senate Republicans, with the exception of Rand Paul of Kentucky, voted in favor of the war.

The eventual approval of the reconciliation package in 2025, which combined significant reductions in Medicaid and federal food assistance with broad tax cuts and a significant increase in federal money for immigration, was largely supported by Republicans in both chambers.
