Aurat March Lahore held a feminist press conference today to announce its twelve-point charter of demands. The march will take place on International Women’s Day (March 8) from the Lahore Press Club to outside the Falettis Hotel on Egerton Road from 2 to 6 p.m.
Aurat March invited media outlets to bring female and transgender reporters, journalists, and media staff to the press conference to highlight the importance of gender-inclusive media. The speakers at the conference discussed how the Aurat March, feminist movements, and women in politics have been misrepresented in the media.
The speakers advocated for gender-sensitive media coverage that focuses on the March’s actual demands rather than misinformation. The speakers reiterated the Lahore chapter’s focus for the year 2024.
“Politics, Resistance, Liberation” emphasizes that Pakistan’s Election Commission has entirely failed to hold a free and fair election, hence losing the people’s faith.
To restore trust in the election process, the March advocated for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission comprised of people-led groups, marginalised communities, and all political parties. The speakers were disappointed that the ECP had failed to ensure that all political parties met the minimum criteria of 5% women’s nominations on general seats.
