Previous Article West Bengal Voter List Controversy: Millions Removed Ahead of 2026 Elections Mass Removal of Voters Sparks Political Tension A major political controversy has emerged in West Bengal as nearly nine million people have been removed from the voter list ahead of the 2026 state elections. Among those affected is Muhammad Daud Ali, a 65-year-old former army technician. He recently found that his name, along with his three children, had been removed from the electoral rolls. Despite having valid documents like a passport and service records, they were excluded. Only his wife remains registered as a voter. Millions Affected by Electoral Roll Revision The removals are part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) carried out by the Election Commission of India. This process aims to clean voter lists by removing duplicate and outdated entries. Out of the nine million removed voters, more than six million were marked as either deceased or absent. However, around 2.7 million cases are still under review. These cases will now go through tribunals for final decisions. West Bengal stands out because it is the only state where an extra layer of verification has been added after the initial revision process. Political Clash Between Government and Election Body The issue has triggered a strong political reaction. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has openly challenged the election authority. The party claims that the process may unfairly target certain groups. On the other hand, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has defended the move. He stated that the goal is to ensure a fair and accurate voter list, with no eligible voter excluded. Migration Debate Adds Fuel to the Crisis The controversy has intensified due to political statements, including remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Some leaders have suggested that the revision is meant to identify illegal migrants, especially from Bangladesh. This has raised concerns, as critics argue that such language may target Muslim communities. However, reports indicate that many Hindu voters have also been removed from the rolls. West Bengal shares a long and porous border with Bangladesh. This has made migration a sensitive and ongoing political issue in the region. Impact on Minority Population The state has one of the largest Muslim populations in India. According to past census data, Muslims make up a significant portion of the population in West Bengal. This has further increased concerns about fairness and representation in the electoral process. Upcoming Elections Under Scrutiny With elections scheduled later this month, the voter list controversy has become a key issue. Political parties continue to campaign, but questions remain about the transparency and fairness of the revision process. West Bengal Voter List Controversy: Millions Removed Ahead of 2026 Elections
Next Article Israel Lebanon Conflict Escalates as Strikes Intensify and Talks Approach Escalation of Violence in Southern Lebanon and Northern Israel Israeli air strikes and Hezbollah rocket fire increased over the weekend across southern Lebanon and northern Israel. Both sides signaled that fighting would continue despite growing diplomatic activity. The conflict has expanded since early March after renewed clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. Israel says its military campaign targets Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. Hezbollah continues rocket attacks toward northern Israel in response. Rising Civilian and Military Casualties Lebanese health authorities report that Israeli strikes have killed 2055 people in Lebanon since fighting resumed on 2 March. They also say 167 people died since Friday. Israel reports that Hezbollah attacks have killed 12 soldiers and 2 civilians during the same period. Among recent civilian victims was a child, around two years old. She survived an earlier strike on her home in southern Lebanon. She later died when another strike hit during her father’s funeral. Her seven year old sister suffered severe burns and remains in hospital. A Red Cross rescuer also died during weekend operations. The organization says a drone strike hit its team while they carried out a humanitarian mission. The Israeli military has not confirmed this claim. Diplomatic Efforts and Upcoming Talks Officials from Lebanon, Israel, and the United States plan to meet in Washington on Tuesday. Lebanese officials say the talks aim to set conditions for a ceasefire. If progress is made, formal negotiations may follow. Lebanon continues to push for an end to the war and a full Israeli withdrawal from its territory. Israel, however, states it will not negotiate a ceasefire with Hezbollah under current conditions. Statements from Political Leaders Lebanon’s prime minister said diplomatic efforts continue despite heavy fighting. He emphasized ongoing negotiations aimed at stopping the war. Israel’s prime minister maintained a firm position while visiting troops in southern Lebanon. He said Israeli forces would continue operations in what he described as a security zone. Israel says this zone extends up to ten kilometers inside Lebanese territory to prevent attacks on Israeli communities. Disputed Military Claims Israeli forces claim they killed more than 20 Hezbollah fighters operating from a hospital area in Bint Jbeil. Lebanese authorities deny this and accuse Israel of striking civilians and medical facilities. Heavy air strikes were also reported in multiple towns in southern Lebanon, including areas that saw major fighting during earlier conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah.
