EasyJet passengers describe major delays at Milan airport under new EU border checks New border system triggers long queues The new system of entry and exit was introduced by the European Union at Milan Linate Airport, causing long queues for passengers. On Sunday, the checks at passport control caused heavy traffic. EasyJet flights to Manchester were missed by many travellers. More than 100 passengers could not board the flight due to long border check delays. Some travelers reported feeling nauseated while in the queue. Other travellers described confusion when biometrics were conducted for the first. Missed flights can cost you a lot After missing their flights, several passengers were forced to return to the United Kingdom on their own. Max Hume was one traveller who reported spending 1800 pounds on his return to home. Other travellers also complained about unexpected expenses, long flight delays and long travel times. The new system has been described as chaotic and stressful by passengers, particularly those who are unfamiliar. What is the cause of disruption? Travellers from the Schengen Area, and British Citizens, must register their biometric information, such as fingerprints or facial scans. The checks must be completed both when you enter and leave the area. The airport groups claim that the check-in process takes longer than anticipated during high travel periods. The industry organisations have reported that some airports had border controls where you could wait up to 3 hours. One case involved passengers who did not arrive at the gate in time and only a few arrived after it had closed. Airline and airport security is a concern Airline and airport groups are concerned about the implementation of this system. The current rule only allows for a limited suspension when the queues are too long, they say. Prior to the change in system, there was more freedom for authorities to suspend operations at times of high congestion. Now, industry groups want to have more control over the system in order to avoid major delays.

Previous Article French cement company found guilty of paying armed groups in Syria A court finds that illegal payments are linked to Syria-related operations The Paris Court ruled French cement firm Lafarge funded armed groups, such as Islamic State in Syria, to maintain its cement factory's operation during the civil conflict. The judges said that the company had paid out millions of dollars in protection funds between 2013 and 2014. Total cost was approximately 6.5 millions dollars. It was a goal to continue business at the northern Syria location as conflict escalated. Eight former employees were also found guilty of financing terrorism by the court. Former chief executive Bruno Lafont was sentenced to six years in prison. The payment method Lafarge employees arranged payment to several armed groups that controlled territory near the plant, according to investigators. Included in these payments were funds to ensure safe passage, access to raw material and for the payment of fees. A portion of the money used was to purchase raw materials from regions controlled by Islamic State. The judges said that the agreement effectively established a working relation with organisations proscribed. Judges condemn corporate decisions The judge Isabelle Prevost Desprez stated that the payments allowed armed groups to strengthen their control of resources. This allowed the groups to finance attacks in Europe and Middle East. Court ruled the financial survival of the factory drove company decisions. The judges said that economic interests came first before ethical and legal limits. Defense arguments are rejected Former executives claimed that the continued operation of local operations protected workers. Former executives said that leaving the site would have placed workers at risk. This justification was not accepted by the court. The court ruled the payments supported terrorist activities. Wider legal consequences Cement plant Jalabiya, purchased in 2008, began operating in 2010 - shortly before the Syrian war began. Holcim now owns the company. The company was fined over one million Euros. Separate investigations into crimes against humanity are still underway. It is the first time in France that a company was convicted of financing terrorism. French cement company found guilty of paying armed groups in Syria
Next Article Keir Starmer Pushes Closer UK EU Cooperation Amid Brexit Tensions UK moves toward tighter alignment with EU rules Prime Minister Keir Starmer is pushing for a closer working relationship with the European Union, following commitments first outlined during the 2024 general election. The plan includes ongoing talks between the UK and EU on food and drink standards, carbon emissions, and electricity cooperation. A key part of the proposal is “dynamic alignment.” This would mean the UK not only matches current EU rules in selected areas but also continues updating its regulations as EU laws evolve. Parliament role and concerns over oversight The government plans to bring legislation forward later this year. MPs will vote on the main framework. After that, many future changes could be handled through secondary legislation. That approach has raised concerns among opposition parties. Critics argue it reduces direct parliamentary scrutiny over rule changes that follow EU updates. Political backlash over sovereignty Conservative and Reform UK leaders strongly oppose the plan. Andrew Griffith, the shadow business secretary, warned it could turn Parliament into a passive body while EU rules shape UK policy. Nigel Farage also criticised the approach, saying it allows rule adoption without real influence over decision making. He described it as a reversal of the Brexit referendum outcome. Supporters of the policy argue that targeted alignment could improve trade efficiency and economic stability, even if it limits independent rule making in certain sectors. Starmer links policy to global instability Starmer has framed the shift as a response to rising global uncertainty. He argues that closer cooperation with Europe strengthens the UK position in an unstable world. He has also suggested that Brexit has harmed economic performance and that deeper cooperation could help repair some of that damage. Political strategy and shifting debate The issue was once handled cautiously by Labour leadership due to concerns about voter sensitivity on Brexit. However, changing public opinion and growing political pressure have made the topic more prominent. Recent polling suggests Brexit is less popular than in previous years. At the same time, Labour is facing pressure from progressive voters who want stronger ties with Europe. Limits of the current approach Despite the new direction, the government is not proposing a return to the single market or customs union. That means the UK would not reintroduce free movement of people or abandon its independent trade agreements. This middle path is likely to keep the debate active within both Parliament and the Labour Party. Keir Starmer Pushes Closer UK EU Cooperation Amid Brexit Tensions
