Tata Steel Theft Case: Workers Jailed After £1.2m Tin Heist From Welsh Steelworks Major theft uncovered at Trostre steel plant A major theft case at Tata Steel’s Trostre site in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, has led to prison sentences for three workers and one accomplice after they stole around 50 tonnes of tin ingots worth nearly £1.2 million. The crime took place between July 2023 and October 2024 and involved repeated removal of valuable metal from the steelworks. How the operation worked Court hearings revealed that Matthew Membury, aged 32, made multiple trips into the site using a transit van. He gained access with a fake ID that had been provided by security supervisor Stewart Jones. When the plant was quiet, Membury was allowed entry and coordinated the removal of tin ingots. Inside the facility, cast house supervisor Thomas Ashford used a forklift to load the tin into the van. After that, Membury drove the stolen material off-site and sold it to scrap dealers. Stewart Jones also sent messages to warn when conditions were safe for the thefts to take place. Payments and profit split Investigators found that Membury received about £740,000 from scrap sales, but kept around £340,000 for himself. Ashford took more than £250,000 from the operation. Stewart Jones received over £80,000, while Richard Jones was paid around £60,000. Arrest and discovery The group was arrested in October 2024 after they were caught trying to leave the site with stolen tin. Police also found three swords inside the back of Membury’s van during a follow up search. Sentences handed down At Swansea Crown Court, Thomas Ashford and Stewart Jones were both jailed for three years and four months. Richard Jones received a 20 month suspended sentence, along with unpaid work and a curfew order. Membury, who did not appear in court for sentencing, is already serving a separate 32 month prison term for arson. His new sentence will be added once he appears before the court. Recovery of stolen money The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed it will begin proceedings to recover the criminal proceeds from the case.

Previous Article UK Expands Prostate Cancer Screening Trial for Black Men Major step in targeted prostate cancer checks The UK government has expanded a prostate cancer screening trial to include tens of thousands of black men aged 45 to 74. These men will be invited for testing to help improve early detection methods for the disease. Health officials say the aim is to find better ways of identifying prostate cancer earlier, especially in high risk groups. Black men face a much higher risk, with studies showing their lifetime chance of developing prostate cancer is about one in four. Why black men are being prioritised Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer among men in the UK. Around 64,000 men receive a diagnosis each year, and about 12,000 die from the disease. Medical data shows black men face double the risk compared to other groups. Because of this, researchers are focusing on targeted screening to close the gap in outcomes and improve survival rates. What the screening trial includes The government has committed £18 million to support the Transform trial. The study will test whether combining different methods improves accuracy. Participants may receive: PSA blood tests to detect prostate specific antigen levels Genetic testing to identify higher risk variants Faster MRI scans for more detailed imaging Researchers hope this combined approach will reduce missed cases and improve early diagnosis. Debate over routine screening Health experts continue to debate routine screening for all men. The UK National Screening Committee recently advised against regular PSA testing for most men without symptoms. They argue that PSA screening can lead to unnecessary treatment. Some prostate cancers grow slowly and may never cause harm. However, treatment can still lead to serious side effects such as bladder control problems and erectile dysfunction. For now, men are still encouraged to speak with a doctor if they notice symptoms like difficulty urinating. A step toward better future screening Officials believe the expanded trial will help shape a more accurate national screening system in the future. Health leaders say the focus is now on improving precision rather than broad testing. A health spokesperson said the programme is designed to focus on those most at risk and strengthen research to close evidence gaps.
