Authorities in Quebec have identified a 25 year old man from Alberta as the suspect in a deadly shooting that shook a Montreal neighbourhood. The incident claimed the lives of a police officer and a local resident, while another officer suffered injuries.
According to investigators, Seth Hatfield from Lethbridge, Alberta, allegedly opened fire from a hotel room window in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges district on Monday. Police responded quickly and fatally shot the suspect during the operation.
Police Continue Investigation Into Motive
Officials have not yet announced a motive for the shooting. Investigators are examining all available evidence to determine what led to the attack.
Reports suggest that a document linked to the suspect circulated online after the incident. The document reportedly contained anti government, anti capitalist, and misogynistic views. However, authorities have not confirmed its authenticity and continue to investigate its connection to the case.
The Quebec coroner’s office officially confirmed the suspect’s identity on Tuesday.
Victims Identified
Authorities identified the fallen police officer as 34 year old Mohamed Lamine Benredouane. They also confirmed the death of 64 year old Michel Mizrahi, a local resident who was caught in the violence.
Stéphanie Valenzuela, mayor of Côte-des-Neiges, said Benredouane grew up in the community he later served. He joined the Montreal Police Service in 2021 and dedicated himself to protecting residents.
During an emotional press conference, the mayor described his actions as heroic and praised his commitment to public safety.
A second police officer suffered injuries during the incident and received medical treatment.
Shooting Began From Hotel Window
Police said the shooting started around midday. Officers responded after a witness reported seeing a firearm extending from a hotel window and hearing gunshots.
Videos shared online appeared to show the suspect wearing military style clothing and carrying a long gun. Investigators believe he acted alone.
Authorities are still reviewing evidence and eyewitness accounts to establish the exact sequence of events.
Community Reacts to Tragedy
Investigators believe Michel Mizrahi may have died during the exchange of gunfire. However, officials have not released final details about how the shooting unfolded.
Mizrahi was known as a father of three and worked in the clothing business, selling suits in the local community. Friends and community members have remembered him as a respected and caring individual.
The shooting took place in an area with a significant Jewish population. As a result, some residents have expressed concerns about a possible antisemitic motive. Police have not confirmed any connection and continue to examine all possibilities.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses as they work to understand what led to the deadly attack. Police have urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation remains active.
The tragedy has left Montreal residents mourning the loss of two lives and searching for answers about one of the city’s most shocking incidents in recent years.
