Footballer Safe After Shooting Incident
Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga escaped unharmed after a gunman opened fire on his vehicle in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Sunday. Police have launched an attempted murder investigation, while authorities continue searching for the suspect.
The 31 year old defender was reportedly driving through Hillbrow with his younger brother on their way to church when the shooting happened. Local reports say an unidentified attacker fired several shots at their vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Fortunately, neither Lunga nor his brother suffered any injuries during the frightening incident.
Police Begin Attempted Murder Investigation
South African police confirmed they are investigating the shooting as an attempted murder case. Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said investigators have not arrested anyone so far and the investigation remains ongoing.
According to local media reports, investigators believe the attacker may have mistaken Lunga for an undercover police officer. However, police have not officially confirmed the motive behind the shooting.
South Africa continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime, including one of the world’s highest murder rates. Authorities are working to identify the suspect and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the attack.
Divine Lunga’s Successful Football Career
Lunga is one of Zimbabwe’s most experienced defenders. He has earned 21 appearances for the Zimbabwe national football team and has represented his country in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign.
The defender joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021 and has enjoyed significant success with the South African club. During his time there, he has helped the team secure four domestic league titles.
Earlier this year, Lunga also played an important role as Mamelodi Sundowns lifted their second African Champions League title, adding another major achievement to his career.
National Team Shares Support
Neither Mamelodi Sundowns nor Zimbabwe’s football federation released an official statement immediately after the incident.
However, Zimbabwe’s national team, known as the Warriors, shared a photo of Lunga in a prayer pose on social media. The post carried the message, “In God we trust,” alongside the defender’s name, showing support following the shocking attack.
Fans across Zimbabwe and South Africa also expressed relief that the experienced defender escaped without injury.
Investigation Continues
Police continue gathering evidence and searching for the suspect involved in the shooting. Investigators hope to establish the motive and bring those responsible to justice.
For now, Divine Lunga remains safe, and supporters across African football will be hoping the experienced defender can quickly move past the traumatic incident and return his full focus to the game.
