The Italian opponent Jannik Sinner defeated world No. 1 tennis star Novak Djokovic in the Grand Slam semifinal, according to the BBC.
For Djokovic, the run came to an end on Friday. In the men’s singles semifinal, fourth seed Sinner overcame the defending champion, causing the Serbian star to lose for the first time in six years.
It’s Djokovic’s first Australian Open semifinal loss after he had won ten straight matches earlier in the season.
The Serbian legend suffered a shocking defeat to his Italian opponent, going down 1-6, 2-6, 7-6 (6), and 3-6 in 3 hours and 21 minutes, making tennis history.
He was two wins away from his record-tying 25th Grand Slam and 11th championship.
At just 22 years old, Sinner will now try to win his maiden Grand Slam championship. He has, nevertheless, already overcome Djokovic once. He had previously defeated him at the Davis Cup and in the group stage of the Association of Tennis Players (ATP) Finals.
Sinner is now the first player from Italy to advance to the Australian Open finals.
He has defeated Djokovic three times in their last four games. Sinner laughed and responded, “I don’t know,” when asked what made his game unique. Question him!”
Sinner remarked prior of the semifinal that he felt “lucky” to play Djokovic.
