Tariff changes begin September 15, 2026
Why it matters The measures could affect cross border trade, exporters, manufacturers, farmers, and consumers.

New U.S. Import Restrictions

The Trump administration says Canada has continued what it considers discriminatory treatment of U.S. commerce.

The new measures include import bans covering selected Canadian products linked to disputes over alcoholic beverages and dairy. Separate action also addresses Canada’s treatment of the U.S. motor vehicle sector.

The White House says the import bans will begin on September 29, 2026. Other changes to the list of products covered by the Section 338 tariffs will begin on September 15.

Canada Responds With New Tariffs

Canada has imposed new retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion of U.S. exports.

The affected American exports include steel, dairy products and agricultural equipment. The latest move adds to a growing trade dispute between the two North American neighbors.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada walked away from trade negotiations and continued its retaliatory measures.

Changes to Existing Tariffs

The United States is not simply adding new restrictions.

The administration is also changing the products covered by earlier Section 338 tariffs. Some products, including rock salt and cement, will leave the tariff list. Other products, including additional dairy products and all terrain vehicles, will be added.

The White House also says the Section 338 measures apply even when covered goods qualify under the United States Mexico Canada Agreement.

Canada Trade Fight Could Hit Businesses

The latest action could affect companies that depend on cross border trade.

Canadian exporters may face new restrictions when selling selected goods in the U.S. market. American businesses that export to Canada could also face higher costs if Canadian retaliation continues.

The dispute could also put more pressure on Washington and Ottawa to return to negotiations.

What Comes Next for Canada Trade

The first major date to watch is September 15, when changes to the tariff coverage take effect.

The new import bans are scheduled to begin on September 29. U.S. Customs and Border Protection will handle implementation of the restrictions.

The next step will depend on whether the two governments resume serious trade negotiations or continue expanding their respective measures.

The measures show that the disagreement remains unresolved. With additional restrictions scheduled to take effect later this month, businesses on both sides of the border will be watching closely for the next move.
