The Dodgers did more than just punch another ticket to October when they secured their 14th consecutive playoff participation on Monday nite in Cincinnati. They tied one of the most amazing records in baseball history.

The Atlanta Braves made it to the postseason every season between 1991 and 2005. The Dodgers followed suit from 2013 until 2026.

There are striking parallels between the two runs. We can learn a lot about how baseball has evolved from the disparities.

Quick Fact

Braves Dynasty vs. Dodgers Model

For the baseball of the 1990s, Atlanta’s dynasty was constructed. Starting pitching, especially the incredible three of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz, was crucial. While John Schuerholz oversaw the front office, Bobby Cox offered exceptional steadiness in the dugout.

Stars like Fred McGriff, David Justice, Andruw Jones, and Javy Lopez passed through Atlanta at different points throughout the period, while Chipper Jones finally came to represent the regular lineup.

A large portion of that skill was created by the Braves themselves. One generation was able to progressively replace another as their organization gained notoriety for player development and scouting.

The Dodgers’ Organizational Blueprint

With Clayton Kershaw at the peak of his abilities and a squad that featured stars like Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez, and Kenley Jansen, their run started in 2013. The names underwent significant changes over time.

Cody Bellinger and Corey Seager showed up. One of the key players of the time was Justin Turner. Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman followed, and then Shohei Ohtani and still another group of celebrities.

The organization itself has remained consistent. Stan Kasten offers a connection between the two periods that is nearly incredible.

Two Paths to October Glory

One kind of baseball roster creation was perfected by Atlanta. Another has been mastered by Los Angeles.

Additionally, there is a significant difference in the amount of effort required just to get to October.

Each league had just two divisions when the Braves started their run in 1991. The Wild Card did not exist. Go home or win the division.

Atlanta never required the Wild Card during the 1995 postseason expansion. First in the NL West and then the NL East, the Braves consistently won their division. The 1994 playoffs was destroyed by the strike, setting a historic record.

Two Paths to October Glory

Atlanta perfected one type of baseball roster construction. Los Angeles has conquered another.

The amount of work needed simply to reach October also varies significantly. When the Braves began their run in 1991, there were just two divisions in each league. There was no such thing as the Wild Card. Win the division or go home.

During the 1995 postseason expansion, Atlanta never needed the Wild Card. The Braves often won their division, first in the NL West and then in the NL East. The 1994 postseason was disastrous.

The Dodgers’ October Challenge

The Dodgers are now competing in an even wider postseason field after starting their run in the Wild Card era. They won 12 division titles up to 2025 and only finished second in 2021, when they still won 106 games, demonstrating their nearly complete dominance of the NL West.

It may be simpler to get into October with that bigger playoff field. It may also make it more difficult to win the World Series.

These days, clubs have more rounds and more chances for three or four poor games to ruin a fantastic regular season.

When Dominance Meets October Disappointment

It got to the point of becoming unjust. Even if Atlanta won 100 games, won another division, and advanced to the NLCS, the season would still be remembered mostly for its conclusion.

Dodgers supporters are familiar with that emotion.

Los Angeles appeared to be going for the same historical verdict throughout the most of its current run.

Three Championships Change Everything

In 2024 and 2025, the Dodgers triumphed once more. In contrast to Atlanta’s one World Series title, they have now won three during their 14-year postseason run. Additionally, they have made five World Series appearances during their respective histories, matching the Braves.

That does not imply that all of the postseason annoyance has disappeared. Fans of the Dodgers may still reflect on 2019, 2022, and 2023 and marvel how such talented teams vanished so fast. The Astros sign-stealing incident will always be a source of frustration for the 2017 title. Opportunities abounded in October.

Two Dynasties, One October Test

This period has received the October confirmation that Atlanta never fully achieved thanks to three triumphs, including back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025. As the 2026 postseason approaches, Los Angeles hopes to achieve an even greater feat: becoming the first club to win three straight World Series since the Yankees in 1998–2000.

These two historic streaks could eventually diverge at that point.

Atlanta demonstrated the longevity of a strong company. Despite operating in a time of extended playoffs, high roster turnover, analytics, luxury-tax penalties, and unparalleled player mobility, the Dodgers have equaled that durability.
