In advance of the midterm elections on November 3, 2026, which will see US voters choose governors in every state as well as members of the House of Representatives and Senate, early voting has been going on for weeks.

By definition, the president is not involved in the midterms, which are held in the midst of each four-year presidential term.

However, have a look at these two figures if you believe they don’t have any drama or significance this year:

Quick Fact

Detail Information
What Happened Key races will shape the 2026 US midterm elections.
Location Across the United States
Election Date November 3, 2026
Key Races New York, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey
Main Parties Republicans and Democrats
Key Issues Fuel prices, election integrity, and congressional control
Why It Matters The results will shape congressional leadership, investigations, and legislation.

Record Voter Turnout and Political Ad Spending

If voter turnout is comparable to that of the previous midterm in 2022, over 100 million people are expected to cast votes in this year’s election; as of October 12, a record $3.8 billion has been spent on political ads that have been broadcast thus far.

According to AdImpact, which monitors the activity, battleground US Senate contests in Texas, Ohio, and Michigan account for the majority of expenditure.

Campaign finance records show that Elon Musk alone has contributed around $366 million to Republicans.
However, compared to the more well-known presidential contests, midterm elections often draw fewer votes. Over 155 million votes were cast.

CONTROL OF CONGRESS AT STAKE

As Democrats attempt to gain majority control of the US Congress, a lot is at risk in this midterm election.

In the House, where there are two vacancies and one independent who caucuses with Republicans, Republicans now possess a 218-214 majority.

To gain power, Democrats need to earn a net gain of four seats.

Republicans control a 53-47 advantage in the Senate, where Democrats are also vying for control. To gain power, they need to secure four more seats. The result might be determined by ten races, including those in Maine, Ohio, North Carolina, Iowa, and Georgia.

CAN THE PRESIDENCY BE AFFECTED BY MIDTERMS?

For the political party that controls Congress and/or the White House, midterm elections are typically risky. This indicates that President Donald Trump and the Republicans who control the US Senate and House of Representatives are in dangerous political situations as of 2026.

Voters may be able to evaluate the president’s performance during the midterm elections, and if they score poorly, the White House may decide to change its direction.

The outcomes of the midterm elections can also provide prospective presidential candidates with guidance on how to modify their messaging to appeal to voters in the upcoming campaign, which in this case will take place in 2028.

What Are Polls Showing?

According to a September survey, the percentage of people who approve of Trump’s performance is at an all-time low of 32%.

Rising consumer costs and other domestic factors might undermine support for Republicans and influence the results of several elections.

However, there is evidence that Democrats are more eager than Republicans to cast their ballots this year. Early voting patterns might indicate a Democratic victory in November.

Midterm Elections Through History

The shockwaves that a midterm election may cause are demonstrated by recent history.

Republicans won 63 more House seats in the 2010 midterm elections during Barack Obama’s Democratic administration, despite the US economy’s poor performance and the lack of support for Obama’s historic healthcare reform legislation. The majority was lost by Democrats. Despite losing six seats, they managed to maintain control of the Senate.

Obama bemoaned the Republican wave at the time, calling it a “shellacking.” Republicans then demanded that he drastically cut non-defense expenditures.
With Trump in the White House in 2018, Democrats repaid the favor.

How House Control Could Shape Policy

Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York is projected to be the next speaker, second in line for the presidency after the vise president, if Democrats regain the House. At the moment, he is the Democratic leader of the House.

As the first Black American to occupy the influential post, Jeffries would be able to instruct House committees to begin looking into a variety of contentious actions by Trump and his aides.

Jeffries has stated time and time again that Democrats will investigate what he has described as “unprecedented levels of corruption” during the Trump administration.

Key House Races and Election Integrity

Republican Representative Mike Lawler’s bid for reelection to a New York district that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris won in her 2024 presidential campaign and an open seat in a Nebraska swing district where farmers and truckers must contend with significantly higher fuel prices due to the US war against Iran are two of the most anticipated House contests.

Two districts in Pennsylvania and one in New Jersey are also at the top of Democrats’ list of House seats they want to wrest from Republicans.
Questions about whether Trump will attempt to influence the elections loom over all of this.
