While campaigning for Representative Marcy Kaptur in a hotly fought Ohio congressional district that is essential for majority control of the House, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries stated on Sunday that the electoral environment is staying steady for Democrats.
Additionally, Jeffries responded to President Donald Trump’s sudden decision to lift sanctions against Russia by stating that a bipartisan effort will be made in the House to seek a new set of penalties that the president would not be able to lift.

Jeffries Criticizes Trump Over Ukraine Democracy
After attending church services in Toledo, Jeffries told The Associated Press, “It’s shocking, but not surprising, that an American president would do so much to undermine the cause of democracy, freedom, and dignity for the Ukrainian people.”
Jeffries has been to almost 50 places to support Democratic candidates. If Democrats regain the majority, he will be the next speaker of the House. He said that the House Republicans are “divorced from reality” because they believe that the election on November 3 would be a repetition of the 2024 sweep that elected Trump to the presidency, as Speaker Mike Johnson just stated.
These midterm elections, which will decide control of Congress, are hotly competitive in the Buckeye State. The Senate contest between Republican Sen. Jon Husted and Democrat Sherrod Brown has received a lot of attention, but the House elections are crucial to gaining control of that body on a district-by-district basis.
One of the main priorities has been the House seat in the Toldeo region. Kaptur is the House’s longest-serving female member, having served for decades. However, Republicans are attempting to turn the district around after Trump won it. Two years ago, Kaptur beat GOP candidate Derek Merrin, but he is making progress.
Trump’s waiver of Russia sanctions roils campaigns
A sizable Ukrainian American community has lived in the region, and Kaptur founded and serves as co-chair of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus, a nonpartisan group of congressmen with a special interest in the nation.
She was critical of Trump’s late-Friday decision to waive parts of the Lindsey Graham-named Russia sanctions measure, which Congress had enacted to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion.
Over the weekend, both Republicans and Democrats in Congress voiced their displeasure with Trump’s decision to lift the penalties, which were scheduled to go into force on Sunday.
Johnson Urges Caution Over Trump’s Decision
Several of his coworkers have expressed worries, Johnson stated on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” on Sunday. He stated that he has not yet discussed it with Trump, but he is aware that the president is assessing the circumstances.
