His entire life has been spent rebranding himself.

He transformed from a controversial stand-up comedian to a Hollywood actor and TV personality. He turned become a YouTuber and political activist, supporting Donald Trump for president in 2024 after first embracing left-wing causes related to inequality in the 2010s and later Covid conspiracies. He was baptized as a Christian in the River Thames in London the same year.

He can now try on the persona of a convicted rapist.

The Rise and Fall of Russell Brand

After a three-week trial, the disgraced comedian was found guilty on Thursday of one crime of rape and three charges of sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court.

It’s evident that the actions that led to Brand’s conviction also contributed to his first rise to prominence as he faces jail time.

Fame Built on Sexual Excess

Brand became well-known for being a sexually provocative libertine who delighted audiences with his risqué humor.

He developed the persona of a shameless, ravenous womanizer. His comedy content revolved upon sex, drugs, and excess.

Brand sold out stand-up comedy clubs, theaters, and broadcasters during the ten years of his offenses.

At his stand-up comedy performances, Brand enthralled audiences with the explicit descriptions of his sexual experiences, including anal intercourse, prostitutes, and orgies, while sporting drainpipe black trousers and backcombed hair.

Misogyny Disguised as Comedy

He simulated masturbation and sex on stage. He said he liked oral sex with women “where it goes in their neck a little bit” and their “mascara runs a little bit,” acting it out on stage.

Even Brand’s own barrister called the humour “a product of its time,” reminding the jury in the trial that this graphic sexualised comedy was viewed as “radical and different” back then.

Barely a generation later, many will view it as deeply rooted misogyny dressed up as humour. But these were different times.

An era that celebrated casual sexism

In Britain, casual sexism was lauded in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and celebrities who supported it were frequently promoted.

A nude picture of Scottish TV host Gail Porter was projected onto the Houses of Parliament in 1999 by FHM. She first learned about it after seeing the news, and she subsequently discussed how it had a significant impact on her emotional well-being.

Some people found what is now known as toxic masculinity amusing, viewing it as classic masculine humor. Others thought it was acceptable since it seemed to be done with a sardonic raising of the eyebrow.

Fame, Sex and Excess in Print

However, there were hints at the time that his crazy stage performance continued after the show stopped, most notably in his best-selling memoir from 2007, My Booky Wook.I’m a Grays guy with a great career, a great haircut, and a Wonka ticket to a gorgeous sex factory because of my old renown.”

Many of his sexual partners gave their consent, of course. His defense attorney reminded the jury that “having lots of sex is completely lawful” while stating that “he devoted himself for many years to a highly promiscuous life.”

Fame and success brought him 'birds'

“The rules change when you’re famous. In that case two is often better than either none or one.”

He talks about how an MTV PR “reminded me that I put lap dances and prostitutes on her gold card and got the hotel to give me cash on her account without her prior knowledge”.

The Observer termed it “a scandalous, libidinous memoir that is better written and more entertaining than any number of celebrity autobiographies that clog the shelves”.
