ISLAMABAD: On Tuesday, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the acting prime minister, declared that despite many obstacles, every effort had been taken to guarantee a smooth and peaceful conduct of the nationwide general elections, which are scheduled for February 8.

The former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, led a group of the Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) that paid him a visit today.

The PM Office released a statement stating that the meeting was a part of the COG’s engagement with different stakeholders in front of the impending Pakistani election.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Kakar stated that the nation is honored to uphold its duty as a member of the Commonwealth by inviting impartial foreign observers to monitor the general elections.

He also emphasized that the caretaker administration had done its part to administer the state’s daily operations and foster a favorable atmosphere in advance of the elections.

He continued, “It is now the Pakistani people’s turn to exercise their democratic right to vote.”

Jonathan expressed his gratitude to the acting prime minister and the best wishes of Patricia Scotland, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth.

He announced that the COG delegation would be observing the election process by visiting different polling places across the nation.

Armed forces personnel have departed for poll duties in different districts around the nation in an effort to guarantee free, fair, and peaceful elections.

The Army is being deployed with the intention of assisting the civil government in the run-up to the general elections while also guaranteeing the integrity of the voting process and maintaining law and order.

For security purposes, military officers will be stationed outside the third-tier voting places so that any emergency can be handled quickly.

During the polling process, civil armed forces will provide second-tier protection, while police will offer first-tier security.
