Before talking about Hamilton’s seat at Mercedes, Alonso stated that his Aston Martin team would be his “first priority” if he continues in Formula 1 after this year.
“[Over the past few years] Ferrari had a very fast car and were fighting for big things,” the Spaniard stated.
“Perhaps Lewis can provide that extra something to challenge for the title. The vehicle is present.”
Hamilton is switching to Ferrari from Mercedes.
During the last five races of the previous season, Ferrari secured more pole positions than Red Bull, according to Alonso, who expressed his belief that the new Aston Martin “should be a good step forward”.
“Even last year, with a very dominant Red Bull car, Ferrari were able to match the lap time and be faster than them in most of the qualifyings, so the car should be fast enough,” he stated.
However, he questioned Hamilton’s assertion that racing for Ferrari was a “childhood dream,” making reference to recent remarks in which the British driver stated that he wished to spend the rest of his life with Mercedes.
“It wasn’t his boyhood fantasy from a year ago, is it? About two months ago, I suppose, since the dream was different back then,” Alonso remarked.
The 42-year-old added that up until now, he had “no contact” with Mercedes. Despite his contentious relationship with the German manufacturer from his time as Hamilton’s teammate at McLaren-Mercedes in 2007, he is being considered by the former world champions for the driver’s seat next year.
Additionally, it’s reported that Mercedes is considering supporting Formula One rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, an Italian emerging star.
