The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) constituted an investigating committee, which ruled that former Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Chattha’s charges of election manipulation were untrue and based on lies.
The committee’s report, submitted on Friday, proposes judicial action against Chattha for leveling false claims that could jeopardize the commission’s legitimacy.
The former Rawalpindi commissioner initially made severe claims against the ECP, stating that he was pressed to alter election results in Rawalpindi. However, the committee’s inquiry, which included testimony and evidence, revealed no basis for these assertions.
The ECP inquiry committee thoroughly reviewed Chatta’s claims, reviewing evidence and conducting interviews with key personnel. Their findings, according to sources, definitively refuted charges of rigged elections.
Chatta allegedly stated during the probe that he was influenced by external forces when making his statement, a detail included in the inquiry report, as per sources.
Insider sources also reported that Liaquat Chatta expressed contrition for his remarks before the probe committee.
According to informed sources, the findings show that the former Rawalpindi commissioner’s charges lack credibility.
The inquiry report includes Chatta’s statement, as well as information about 6D votes and votes from national and provincial seats obtained from insiders.
