After the Liverpool-based team’s 10-point deduction for violating financial regulations was lowered to six earlier on Monday, Andy Burnham said the way officials have handled the team still “doesn’t feel fair”.
He told Sky News’s Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge that, as an avid Everton supporter and season ticket holder, he thought that an independent regulator was more necessary.
“The Premier League has proved, in my view, that they can’t properly regulate football through the way it’s treated Everton Football Club,” added Burnham.
“We need a strong, independent statutory regulator for football, learning from all of the wrong things that have been done over recent weeks.”
Everton appealed the punishment on nine reasons, two of which were upheld, and the decision to lessen the punishment was made earlier on Monday.
