KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) Chief Justice (CJ) Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi stated Tuesday that social media platforms were being regulated — and the names of those causing the disruption would not be kept concealed for long.
The court’s remark was in response to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) response during the hearing of petitions challenging the suspension of internet and social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.
The inaccessibility of social media platform X, which is a significant source of information, began non the country prior to the February 8 general election, and the country also experienced total internet outage during the polls.
Since then, netizens have been experiencing periodic disruptions and hindrances in accessing the social networking platform, despite SHC’s stay order.
The hearing was presided over by a two-member panel led by Chief Justice Abbasi and Justice Abdul Mobeen Lakho.
In its statement to the court, the PTA stated that it had no role in halting or throttling social media networks.
“The PTA does not have any tools to slow down or suspend the internet,” the authority’s lawyer told the court.
