KARACHI: Following the Supreme Court’s landmark decision on the late prime minister’s trial, sentence, and execution, the Sindh Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on Thursday declaring Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the founder of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a “National Democratic Hero”.
During a session today, the provincial parliament overwhelmingly hailed the Supreme Court’s historical decision in the presidential reference filed by former President Asif Ali Zardari, seeking to reconsider the death sentence of Pakistan’s first elected prime leader, ZA Bhutto.
During today’s session, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah introduced a resolution that declared the Supreme Court’s opinion as a “significant” gesture, noting that “justice and a fair trial were not granted.”
“This verdict emphasizes the significance of respecting the values of justice and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of status, are guaranteed a fair trial under the Constitution. It serves as a reminder of the need of addressing past injustices and upholding the rule of law in the quest of justice and accountability,” the statement read.
The resolution also commended the “sacrifices of Begum Nusrat Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who sacrificed their lives to seek justice against the cold-blooded judicial murder of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.”
It further asked that the Sindh government contact the Centre to name ZA Bhutto a “National Democratic Hero” in addition to “officially declaring Bhutto a Shaheed (martyr).”
It also requested that the provincial government award political workers.
