SARGODHA: A pupil died from injuries after being mercilessly beaten by his teacher at a private school in Sargodha’s Badar Ranjha town for failing to memorize his lesson, according to reports on Saturday.

The incident occurred two days ago and came to light following the student’s death at a private hospital in Faisalabad.

According to reports, Samiullah, a ninth-grade student, sustained major fractures to his backbone after his teacher struck him with a stick as corporal punishment.

According to police, the victim was initially taken to a hospital in Sargodha before being transferred to Faisalabad due to his deteriorating health. However, Samiullah was unable to survive the injuries and died while undergoing treatment.

Police also informed that a case has been filed in this regard. Later, they confirmed that they had arrested the culprit.

Earlier, the regional police official stated that a post-mortem examination of the deceased youngster will be performed to identify the cause of death, and that directions had been issued for an inquiry into all elements of the case.

National Child Rights Commission (NCRC) Chairperson Ayesha Raza Farooq told Geo.tv that she was “horrified and alarmed” by the occurrence. She stated that the commission has taken “action” on the case and is in close contact with the Sargodha authorities.

She stated that the NCRC had communicated with the Sargodha district police officer (DPO) and requested a report on the student’s untimely death as a result of physical punishment.

Farooq expressed dismay that no rules prohibiting corporal punishment are being implemented in the country’s public or private schools. She stated that the Prohibition of Corporal Punishment Act, 2021, which makes punishing pupils in schools a serious violation, is enforced in the Islamabad Capital Territory.

She stated that the commission has been working relentlessly to have legislation on the topic passed.

“We will take the matter to the assemblies once the newly elected legislatives start functioning and have the laws made and implemented all over the country,” she went on to say.
