Two separate coal mine mishaps in China during the previous 24 hours have killed at least 12 people and left two individuals missing, according to state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV).
The new occurrences involving coal mines follow the government’s recent revision of mining safety rules.
According to CCTV on Tuesday, five individuals were killed and two others were reported missing when an underground coal bunker operated by a company in Zhongyang County, Shanxi Province, collapsed just before midnight on Monday.
Taoyuan Xinlong Coal Industry Co. Ltd. owns the bunker, and the outlet said that aggressive rescue efforts are ongoing.
The Shanxi tragedy followed a warning from the mining safety regulator to prevent overproduction, despite an increase in mortality across China. In another incident, seven people were murdered and two more are missing following a tragic gas explosion at Huaihe Energy’s coal mine in China’s eastern Anhui province, CCTV reported late Monday evening.
