Firebrand populist Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado said on Wednesday that she will not be running in the special election to fill the seat of Colorado GOP Rep. Ken Buck.
On Tuesday, Buck surprised Republicans by declaring he would be leaving Congress on March 22. This announcement would cause a special election to be held on June 25 in order to temporarily fill the seat in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. The House GOP majority will be much smaller as a result of his early retirement.
Earlier this year, Boebert—who presently serves as the representative for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District—announced her intention to challenge Buck in the 3rd. However, the congressman made it clear on Wednesday that she would not be running in the special election to replace Buck because doing so would mean giving up her own seat.
Lauren Boebert’s candidacy in the special election to fill Ken Buck’s seat won’t “further imperil” the already tenuous GOP majority.
