This evening, Mr. Drakeford will submit his resignation to the King.
It is anticipated that on Wednesday morning, his resignation would be formally accepted prior to the confirmation of the next first minister.
The 69-year-old has been in office since December 2018, and it is expected that he will continue to serve on the Senedd until the after election in 2026.
Members of both parties clapped for him during his final First Minister’s Questions (FMQs) on Tuesday afternoon.
“The advice to any performer is always to leave them wanting more,” he stated.
“After this afternoon, everybody will be looking forward to hearing quite a bit less from me; I’m sure of that.”
Mr. Drakeford stated that it was “certainly impossible to predict the state of perma-crisis which we were about to enter” at the time of his election.
“I’m looking forward to continue to play my part from the back benches, to supporting the new first minister and the Welsh government,” he stated.
