As the number of cases of dengue fever in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico continues to soar, the island has declared an epidemic.
Over 340 patients have been admitted to hospitals and at least 549 instances have been reported thus far, according to Puerto Rico’s Department of Health.
According to a translated release from the Department of Health, as of March 21, 2024, there has been a 140% rise in dengue cases for Puerto Rico as compared to the same period last year.
Carlos Mellado Lopez, the health secretary for Puerto Rico, stated in a post on the news that he has been keeping an eye on the rise in dengue infections.
