Price of sugar will increase as mill owners apply for permission to export one million tons.

The request is made in the midst of indications that sugar production is above average, with 75 million tons produced so far this year.

Pakistan needs 500,000 tons of sugar each month, or 600,000 tons per year, according to sources. Mill owners are pushing for exports in order to take advantage of possible earnings, since the Sugar Mills Association has claimed additional 1.5 million tons of sugar reserves.

Due to India’s ban on sugar exports, the present global market rates are so high that mill owners estimate that exporting one million tons of sugar might bring in up to $1 billion in revenue. The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) is scheduled to review the idea in the near future.

Nonetheless, questions have been raised about how sugar exports can affect regional pricing.
