Prosecutors in New York stated that the ex-owner of Tottenham Hotspur, who resides in the Bahamas, gave inside information about four publicly traded firms to his girlfriend, pals, and two of his private pilots, allowing them to profit handsomely.
He acknowledged in court that he had understood he was breaching the law when he entered a guilty plea in January to one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and two charges of securities fraud.
However, rather than forcing a drawn-out extradition struggle, prosecutors claimed that due to his advanced age, poor health, and willingness to appear in person to face the accusations, he deserved mercy.
The 87-year-old was fined £5 million (£4 million) and given a three-year probationary period in court on Thursday.
Lewis said a few words before being given his sentence: “Your honor, I’m here today because I made a terrible mistake.”
