Before their contract expires on April 19, a group of writers for Sesame Workshop—the company behind the popular children’s television program—started negotiating on February 13.
The writers, who are members of the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) and Writers Guild of America West (WGAW), are asking for union coverage for the organization’s social media and animation components, as well as industry-standard yearly raises and enhancements to residuals (compensation for work reproduced).
The global non-profit company Sesame Workshop creates Sesame Street in addition to other children’s television shows like Helpsters and The Not-Too-Late Show With Elmo.
If the writers’ walkout goes through, it will follow the months-long strikes by the US actors’ union SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) that stopped filming in 2023.
